Beagle Information - Who Would Have Thought They Were Hunting Dogs!

If you're interested in beagle information because you're thinking of buying a beagle, they are very sweet dogs - as can be seen in this beagle photo.

But it's important to understand they were used as hunting dogs because they have a very keen sense of smell and hunting instinct. This can express in odd ways in a domestic situation, including a tendency to zero in on underwear in the laundry, and even clean underwear on the clothes line. Perhaps they could be used in a washing  powder commercial :-)

Beagles have a lot of energy, so would best be suited to having a yard to run around in. But if you live in an apartment, they can adapt. But it is important that your beagle be taken for long energetic walks. And the neighbours may find it annoying that he keeps warming you of strange noises by barking.

Don't let your beagle off the leash if you're taking him for walks, as they are tireless when they get the scent of the 'prey', such as a rabbit, and will not necessarily be responsive to all his obedience training.

Any problem behaviours with your beagle, such as him clawing at wood panelling, can be remedied by obedience training, and this should be undertaken to make sure you both live harmoniously. Beagles are extremely sensitive dogs. They can sulk if they don't get their own way. And if they sense that you are laughing at them because of some mishap of theirs, it can upset their emotional equilibrium. They may brood for days. This could be an issue if you have children, so educate them on not upsetting your dog's sensibilities. If you teach them to treat their beagle with the same care and respect they would for other people, and let them understand that their beagle is very sensitive, and can pick up on their intent, this should not be a problem.

When trying to train a beagle, patience is the key to the day. It might help to get some professional assistance by enrolling your dog in a dog obedience class. Beagles do love children, as well as other dogs. So, if you have children, they might benefit by taking the family beagle to a dog obedience class as well.

Beagles come in two sizes. One is under 13 inches, the other 13 to 15 inches. Both types have dark eyes, droopy ears, and a long tail. Their coats are short. The most common coloring is a combination of tan, black and white colors. But you can also find orange, black, or tan dogs with white markings.

For health beagle information to be aware of, they can overeat, and will eat anything, including trash. So, keep your trash in an area they cannot get into, especially if they put on weight and need to go on a diet. Excessive weight could be a potential problem due to their love of eating. Some beagles can also develop heart disease and epilepsy. Generally, however, they are very healthy.

Beagle coats should be groomed to reduce shedding. And they generally get enough exercise to wear down their toenails, but check this to make sure.

Overall, beagles have a lovely, happy nature and are very gentle and well mannered. Treat them with kindness and they will respond with a sunny disposition that is a joy to be around.
