Should I Feed My Dog Only Meat?

Even though dogs love meat, it is only one constituent of a healthy diet for your dog. It does not provide the full spectrum of essential vitamins, minerals, and energy, that other components do.

Dogs need a certain amount of fats for energy, but by the same token they should not be fed too much fat. It is difficult to achieve the right balance by feeding a dog exclusively meat. Trimming the meat of fat will cause an energy deficiency. And if you do not feed your dog commercial dog food but use a natural dog food diet that you make yourself, the preference is to use lean meat most of the time. Other sources of fat are used both to provide essential nutrients and the most optimal types of fat.

Meat will not provide a dog enough calcium. Dogs need a lot of calcium, and simply giving a dog milk in addition is not enough as it doesn't provide the right phosphorus to calcium ratio to offset the high phosphorus content of meat. This ratio is important for the calcium to be used properly by the dog's body.

Meat is an important source of protein for dogs, but it also does not provide the minerals that vegetables do, and grains. If you're using commercial dog food, you can add up to 10% of the weight of the commercial dog food in extra meat. This maintains the balance of nutrients, and anything greater than that will distort the balance.

If you're using natural home made dog food, meat can make up to 25% of the total of the diet, provided it is the only source of protein you use. Using other sources of protein will mean this percentage will have to be adjusted.

There are good arguments in favor of cooking meat for dogs. One is the possibility of infection by bacteria, also by tapeworm. And using human grade meat will ensure there are less chemicals in the type of meat your dog is fed. The best way to ensure your dog is getting the right quantities of nutrients in a home cooked diet is to closely follow the recipes designed by vets with experience in the field. This way, any supplements that need to be added will be, and the right quantity of fats and other elements will be maintained.
