This article describes the 4 stages of puppy socialization, up to 12 weeks of age.Puppy socialization occurs during the 3rd to 12th weeks of puppy development. During this period, the interactions a new puppy has with humans will shape how that puppy relates to people for the rest of its life. So, a puppy who has lots of contact with people will be more likely to form a good bond with people during his adult life. This can be important for the new owners. On the other hand, puppies with little contact with people during its early growth and develpoment will have problems getting used to them when they're older.
There are 4 stages to puppy socialization and development.
Stage 1 of puppy development (3 to 5 weeks old)
During this stage, the puppy will become more aware of its surroundings, and increase his interaction with them. His sense of smell is improving, and his sight and hearing are already present. He will explore his environment much like a toddler might. He'll bark and growl, akin to a toddler goo-gooing and trying to speak. He'll bite his litter pals, who will no doubt be biting back! He will start to wag his tail, and play with the other puppies. As his paws are nearly fully developed, he'll start to walk, though he will get tired easily.
Stage 2 of puppy development (5 to 7 weeks old)
At this stage, a puppy develops its curiosity. He will start to have the capacity to feel a small sense of fear. He'll start to take part in group activities, and sexual play within the litter. During this stage of puppy development its crucial to have a positive environment for the growing puppy. He will start to be weaned during these weeks.
Stage 3 of puppy development (7 to 9 weeks old)
This is called the stage of behavioral refinement. His hearing and eyesight will be fully developed, and his exploration of his world will be very active. The puppy will be scared of loud or sudden noises, which is something to be aware of if you have puppies around of this age. He will also be very wary of new things in the environment.
Stage 4 of puppy development (9 to 12 weeks old)
This is the socialization period, and its known as the stage of environmental awareness. Young puppy will have great improvements in his motor skills and coordination, though he has a very short attention span! He will start to establish his behavior in the litter in terms of the social hierachy, and learn how and when to act.
